Compressional waves guided between parallel fractures

چکیده
We have performed experiments on the laboratory scale to image seismic wavefronts of compressional waves that are guided between parallel fractures. The wavefronts are detected using water-coupled 1MHz piezoelectric transducers. The stiffness of the fractures is controlled by applying radial stress in a hydraulic stress apparatus that leaves the observation face of the fractured sample open to measurement. The two fractures form a waveguide in isotropic homogeneous aluminum and act as parallel displacement-discontinuity boundary conditions separated by a distance dE2l: The compressional wave is a leaky guided mode that sheds energy into the medium beyond the fractures. However, the fractures provide sufficiently strong energy confinement inside the central waveguide for a sample length L of approximately LE15l to observe the guided wave. Fractures with low fracture specific stifffness produce strong energy confinement in the guided compressional-mode wave. r 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Modeling 1-D elastic P-waves in a fractured rock with hyperbolic jump conditions
The propagation of elastic waves in a fractured rock is investigated, both theoretically and numerically. Outside the fractures, the propagation of compressional waves is described in the simple framework of one-dimensional linear elastodynamics. The focus here is on the interactions between the waves and fractures: for this purpose, the mechanical behavior of the fractures is modeled using non...
متن کاملInvestigation of the strength and trend of seismic anisotropy beneath the Zagros collision zone
The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Dynamic Permeability on Velocity and Intrinsic Attenuation of Compressional Waves in Sand
Stress waves contain useful information about the properties of porous materials; they can be recovered through different non-destructive testing methods such as crosswell, vertical seismic profile, borehole logging as well as sonic tests. In all these methods, it is crucial to assess the effects of frequency on wave attributes including velocity and intrinsic attenuation. The dependency of per...
متن کاملField Test of a Low-frequency Sparker Source for Acoustic Waveform Logging
Low-frequency acoustic-energy sources for waveform logging have important applications in: 1) Verifying theoretical calculations; 2) generating tube waves in large-diameter boreholes; and 3) providing larger sample volumes in cases where borehole effects are important. A new low-frequency source was fabricated by modifying an existing acoustic-waveform logging system to discharge multiple capac...
متن کاملMonitoring the width of hydraulic fractures with ultrasonic measurements J.Groenenboom A.J.W.Duijndam J.T.Fokkema
Introduction During hydraulic fracturing experiments in the laboratory the opening of hydraulic fractures is monitored with ultrasonic transducers. The experiment closely resembles seismic monitoring surveys in the field [MEADOWS AND WINTERSTEIN 1994, WILLS ET AL. 1992]. The extraction of information out of these experiments is critically dependent on the understanding of the elastodynamic beha...
